A cradle-to-career guide to STEM in Hawaiʻi
What's Your STEM Identity?
When the Hōkūleʻa embarked on their maiden voyage in 1975, they disproved hundreds of years of a western navigational theory that Polynesians arrived in the Pacific by accident. Hōkūleʻa was born a beacon of cultural renewal and a symbol of hope for global community responsibility. "When you let others tell your history," says Pwo navigator Nainoa Thompson on Hōkūleʻa's role in the Hawaiian cultural renaissance, "you allow others to define who you are."
Like Hawai'i's voyaging traditions, our stories are our identity.
The stories we've gathered here share personal journeys from students, entrepreneurs, cultural practitioners, educators, and community leaders. We hope these stories will inspire students' discovery of their own identity and place within STEM.
